Sinking is a technique whereby a disc of sheet metal is hammered with a ball-peen hammer against a depression in a wooden stump. Blows are closely delivered in a spiral direction, from the outside towards the center. When the metal hardens, it is annealed, then the process repeated. Eventually one obtains a bowl, as in the Spertus kiddush cup, shown here.
